Your questions, answered

Answers to the four questions raised on the Perks at Work SMS, plus confirmation of whether it accounts for all Marketing Cloud SMS usage.

Start here — why the usage is higher than the headcount

The audience was 5,741 people, but the account was billed 11,482 messages.

The message runs to 276 characters. Carriers bill SMS in segments of roughly 160 characters, so a message this length is sent and billed as two messages per recipient, not one. That, rather than a second campaign or a repeating send, is what put the account over its SMS allowance.

Bringing a future message under 160 characters would halve the billed volume for the same audience.

5,741 recipients× 2 segments= 11,482 billed messages

Is this a one-time send, or is it going out monthly?

One-time. MobileConnect shows the send status as Completed / inactive — a single message, not a recurring or scheduled series, and it is not attached to any automation. Nothing further will send from this campaign.

Do we have a list of the contacts and phone numbers this was delivered to?

Yes, and I hold it in full. The audience was 5,748 deduplicated, validated US mobile numbers, built from the active-employee extracts Centers supplied — 21 Upstate and 14 Downstate skilled-nursing facilities, active employees only. Every row carries region and facility alongside the number. Because the file contains employee mobile numbers, I am sending it to you directly rather than posting it on this page; see Source files below.

When did the campaign start?

7 August 2026 at 2:44 PM ET. That single send is the entire campaign — there is no earlier or later SMS activity attached to it. The companion Perks at Work email went out the same morning at 10:01 AM ET, delivering 5,841 of 5,983 with zero unsubscribes.

Is there a journey in place — for example, if the SMS isn't opened does it send again?

No. The message was not built inside a journey and carries no resend or follow-up logic. It is also worth noting that SMS has no "opened" signal at all — unlike email, the channel provides no open tracking, so an unopened-triggered resend is not something that can be built. No exclusion list was configured on the send.

From the report, is this the only SMS usage in Marketing Cloud?

Effectively yes. 11,482 of the 11,551 messages in the 30-day window — 99.4% — are this one send, and no other outbound SMS campaign is running in the account. The remaining 69 are not a second campaign: they are consistent with the automated reply traffic a send of this size generates, such as STOP and HELP confirmations, together with residual activity on the dormant JOINTEST and MMSTEST keywords left over from November–December 2025.

What is active today

Seven journeys are marked Running. Six show recent August activity; one internal newsletter journey remains technically active despite having no recorded contact activity since April.

Referral outreach

ADHC regional programs

Four external and hospital referral journeys, split across Downstate and Upstate audiences, plus one internal ADHC journey.

Lead management

Marketing lead follow-up

Marketing_Lead_Journey_V3 is actively processing contacts and recorded activity on August 18.

Internal communications

Centers Strong newsletter

The March 2026 internal newsletter is still marked Running, although its last activity was April 28.

Important distinction“Running” is the SFMC system status, not proof that a program is strategically current. The Centers Strong newsletter should be reviewed for closure or reactivation.

03 · MobileConnect

Why Salesforce reports SMS usage

The alert is legitimate. MobileConnect recorded 11,551 outbound messages in the last 30 days, almost entirely attributable to a single employee-benefit announcement.

04 · Interpretation

Who received it—and what remains active

The evidence points to an employee/workforce communication rather than a patient or referral campaign.

Audience and destination

SFMC identifies the audience as the Perks At Work Launch 2026 target list. The “Total Rewards” language, employee-benefit offer and personal-email registration instruction indicate an internal workforce audience. The summary does not expose individual phone numbers.

Other MobileConnect records

Older test and response configurations remain in the account:

  • JOINTEST opt-in: 9 completed opt-ins
  • MMSTEST response: 3 MMS received
  • Default response: 196 inbound messages
  • STOP: 66 and HELP: 35 responses
  • Several small November–December 2025 test interactions

Practical next steps

These are governance recommendations only; no account settings or campaigns were changed during the review.

Confirm journey owners

Assign a named owner and purpose to each of the seven running journeys, especially the four high-volume ADHC programs.

Resolve the stale newsletter

Confirm whether the March Centers Strong journey should remain Running or be formally stopped and archived.

Document SMS governance

Record who approved the Perks at Work send, its consent basis, audience source, retention expectations and ongoing program owner.

Clean up test assets

Review JOINTEST, MMSTEST and older active/scheduled interaction records so test configurations are not mistaken for production messaging.
